Today’s the day! Make your website mobile friendly according to Google

What’s all the buzz about?

Today, Google sources say April 21st, 2015 is the day they’re rolling out a new algorithm that will help rank websites properly on mobile devices. Some blog authors feel that it will be a totally separate algorithm that will rank sites deemed mobile friendly on the mobile search engine results page; others say it will affect our current desktop rankings as well. We will have to wait and see whether it will be separate or not. But in the meantime, it is imperative that you take a good look at your website and see how mobile friendly it is. This process will be rolling out over the next few days. So keep checking the mobile search engine results page to see if your site has been indexed and listed.

Google+ is the new Google – which is the Internet!

By Jemma Fong · Comments (0)
Monday, May 5th, 2014

Google+ is your number one marketing tool across the Internet, that is my opinion. This week on Wednesday May 7th at 12 noon I will be speaking to the BCX Downtown Toronto networking group about how Google+ can be your greatest promotion, publishing, productivity and social engagement tool through powerful communities. Google+ is the new GOOGLE. It is not just a substitute for Facebook, it is more robust and the key attribute is the integration of the products that increases your overall productivity, improves your access to your customers/suppliers and opens doors to building lasting and resourcesful relationships with those whom you choose to do business or socialize with.

Podcasts: Tools of the Trade

Sound button for podcastsKeeping up with technology is a full time job, new developments coming in everyday. For example, the new WordPress Version 3.9 is coming out on April 16th, Facebook is changing closer to being like Twitter (with hashtag capability), and Twitter is starting to change closer to looking like Facebook (facebook cover page). So how do I keep up? Well each day I listen to podcasts and surf the tech news. When I hear something that peaks my interest I look it up right away and see how that can be of benefit to my clients and possibly my own business.

My favourite podcasts are:

  • http://michaelhyatt.com/thisisyourlife Business/life
  • http://yourwebsiteengineer.com/ WordPress
  • http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/category/podcast-episodes/ Social Media
  • http://www.amyporterfield.com/category/podcast/ Facebook/Pinterest
  • http://www2.webmasterradio.fm/  Variety of Internet Related Topics
  • www.engadget.com/podcasts/mobile Mobile
  • www.firepolemarketing.com Content Marketing

Each of these speakers either share their own expertise in their industry with their audience or interview others to share their expertise. I find each one hits most aspects of my business and much of the information I can then share with my clients and fellow associates. What I like about them, they are all personable and not afraid to tell it like it is, what’s real to them, whether good times or bad, they are authentic and inspirational in their own way. I think if you are considering doing a podcast for your own business, it is important to have these qualities – authenticity, genuine kindness to share, truthful and engaging.

So what type of podcasts do you listen to? Please list them below and share with others.

Are Teenagers Abandoning Facebook? #Infographic
Source: Social Media Intelligence via Right Mix Marketing

I had a client the other day still thinking he could reach the majority of his target audience – high school students through Facebook, but according to this infographic, it certainly doesn’t look to be where they are hanging out. Kids are our future trendsetters, so are your kids exiting this social tool? What tools are they using? Are they Tumblr’ing?

Web Tools to take you into 2011

This post is sourced from Larry Chase’s email newsletter 12/13/2010, discussing tools that we can use to help our business. I checked out a few of them and I wanted to share with you some that will help with your marketing efforts over the holiday season.

I know you will have lots of time between decking the halls, baking up a storm, and getting ready for good ole St. Nick to cuddle up on your couch and do some social network marketing research on all your favourite topics. The first one 48ers is a social networking research search tool that will collect all the real time results of conversations containing that filtered search. If you want to know what people are talking about regarding your subject area, just type in the query, or add #subject, or @subject. It will quickly show you relevant results, with visible icons of source and how recent it was posted.

Another real-time search tool called Topsy is a more comprehensive search tool for Twitter searches.

Topsy gives you both a basic Google-style, one-line search field or an advanced option that allows you to specify or exclude terms or impose time limits.

Some suggested uses:

  • Research trending topics related to your PPC keywords.
  • Find out what people are saying about your company products or service.
  • Track down your most influential Twitterers.

Real time search tool - Topsy

Real time search results help you to see what people are talking about with respect to your subject area. You can review trending topics and many links lead you to ample information. Remember to participate – not only to read these posts, but to become engaged with the conversation. Share your expertise and input. This will position you as an influencer or leader in the field as well provide you with opportunities to learn. Don’t be shy, nor be outlandishly in your face attitude; remember it is just like social networking in person, mind your p’s and q’s.

5-Suggested plugins to use

By Jemma Fong · Comments (0)
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

First let me quickly explain what a plugin is, we can look at the wikpedia definition for plugin: “In computing, a plug-in is a set of software components that adds specific capabilities to a larger software application. If supported, plug-ins enable customizing the functionality of an application. For example, plug-ins are commonly used in web browsers to play video, scan for viruses, and display new file types.” Today I want to introduce 5 key suggested plugins I think will be very useful for your blogs.

1. SEO Blogger plugin that actually is not really a Word Press plugin but a Firefox tool that can aid in writing your post with SEO in mind. You choose a keyword phrase and it then provides you with a variety of keywords and how many times it is searched on, and makes it visible for you to be able to reference it when writing your blog entry.

2. WordTwit plugin, I love this plugin as it saves on time for me, because each time I write a post, it automatically sends a tweet of this post to my twitter.

3. Askimet, this is standard and helpful to keep away spam in your comments section. You need to have an API key for this to work. To get this, you need to set up an account with wordpress.com it will then assign a key for you to use.

4. WordPress Database Backup plugin, this can be set up to backup your database automatically and then send you a zip file directly to your email address.

5. WP Google Analytics plugin lets you use Google Analytics to track your WordPress site statistics.

These are just some popular plugins, but you need to review carefully to make sure they are compatible with your template theme, as well, be wary when updating your theme to ensure that it is compatible with newer versions. Plugins also have their own update process and you will see a little black and white number beside the link if a plugin requires updating. If you need help in setting up plugins for your blog, give us a call 416-451-2063 and we can walk you through the process.
